Sometimes love and compassion come in the form of 4-legged animals, 2-legged birds, etc. and I’m ok with that. Actually, I’m more than ok with that. I’m ecstatic!
In a world filled with so much destruction and hate, finding love of any kind is to be cherished. The kindness and unconditional companionship given from these amazing creatures comes with no conditions and no regrets. They look at us with understanding eyes and open hearts. They stay by our side when we don’t feel well and hold they own needs in check until we get to them.
What is love to an animal? I believe love is a sharing of a kindred soul. A knowing that only exists between an animal and a human. I dare call us “owners” as I think they own me. They saved me when I adopted them from the shelters. They rescued me when my heart was broken. They comforted me when I was down and sad. Nothing asked for in return but love and acceptance.
So my job is not to treat them as “animals” but to treat them with the same humanity they show me. Yes, humanity. If you ever ask a someone who had an animal companion, they’ll tell you that sometimes they truly believed they were human. Their understanding, love, sensitivity, empathy and resourcefulness can only be heaven sent.
Animals were not put here for our entertainment but to remind us of our own humanity. To remind us how to treat each other. To reach out and help others in need just because we can and not because of its reward. When was the last time you looked at someone with unconditional friendship and love? When was the last time you genuinely hugged someone just because they were in your life?
Do we dare limit our love to only those who can only return it unconditionally? I say no. I say we do our best to show those out there who have been hurt in the past that there are still people who love to love. We are all part of the human race so why not treat each other as such.
For all the animals who have shown us true friendship and have become a part of our families, your love will not go unnoticed or unreciprocated. We can and have learned from you the true meaning of love and compassion.
I believe everyone should own one pet in their lifetime, if only to learn the lessons I have in mine.
Love and blessings to each of you,
Coach Dina Blas

Lovely post and so true, my gorgeous ball of fluff (Miss Tiger) is curled up in a ball, on the newspaper, on the kitchen bench, totally blissed out, knowing she is loved and will be fed and will reward us with a purr and leg rub. Love her dearly. xx
Nikki,
Love to hear that! Mine are waiting for me to go to bed since its past “their” bedtime. LOL Thank you for stopping by.
Take care,
Dina
You are talking to the converted here. I kiss my pooch – Ferdy Dog, every day and tell him that I love him.
He came to us as a rescue. I’d never had a dog and so it was all a mystery. What I did know was that he needed love. He is my beautiful baby, who fills my heart just thinking of him.
I believe that it is wrong to cage animals or put leads on them, who are we to dictate? However, without us (and the other way around) they would now be lost. My role is to love and protect.
Woof!
Jacqui,
Awesome story! So glad you took the plunge and united with Ferdy Dog. Sounds like a match made in heaven. But aren’t they all? 🙂
Have a great day!
Dina
I’ve had my four-legged feline friend since 2000 when we “found” each other at Klooga Beach in Estonia. Although he’s really not into traveling at all, he’s been a trooper and has traveled with me from Estonia to the US, back to Estonia, back and forth several times, then eventually a long journey across the US in a van and then up to Canada where we are living now. He has seen me through some very challenging times and I know he was “sent” to me for companionship through these tests along the way. All he asks for is food, a clean litter box, a warm place to live and love from me. It’s that simple.
Viviann,
Thank you so much for sharing! Isn’t is amazing how we “find” exactly what we’re looking for even when we didn’t realize we were looking? (((hugs)))
Blessings,
Dina
This post reminded me of the love my dogs and I shared. But the grief at their parting was hard to bear. dropping by from UBC.
Suzy,
I’m so sorry for your loss. Yes, the pain is sometimes just as great as the love was. I hope you’ll find peace and comfort in the time you had for each other. (((hugs)))
Wishing the best,
Dina
OMG – this post just touched my heart. Thank you for writing it. I find peace with our dogs and cats. They’re my babies, yes, but they also keep me grounded and keep me in the moment.
Visiting from UBC. I’m so glad that I took the time to scroll through the shares!
Kimberly,
So glad you found my post too! 🙂 I love my fur babies and they too keep me grounded. Isn’t it amazing what the power of love and compassion can do? <3
Take care,
Dina
