Today, we will continue on the path of understanding the difference between self-esteem and self-confidence. If you missed Part 1, you can read it here and catch up.
Self-confidence is the belief you have in your own abilities to do something and your judgment. Can I write a 20 page paper on American history in 2 hours? Can I learn this computer program and teach it to someone else? Your self-confidence increases the more experience you have and the more willing you are to try new activities.
There is low self-confidence and high self-confidence, just like the self-esteem category. Low self-confidence means that you don’t trust yourself enough to do something maybe that you’ve never done before. You don’t believe you are capable or you lack the knowledge you think you need in order to proceed. Here are some examples:
- You don’t sign up for an amazing promotion at work even though you know you are more than qualified for the position.
- You don’t ask someone out on a date because you don’t know what to say.
- You don’t sign up for a new class because you don’t believe you are capable of learning anything new.
High self-confidence on the other hand opens the world to you. It allows you to fear nothing and try anything. When you’re in this state, your ability to move forward in life multiplies tremendously. Without hesitations or doubt to slow you down, the world literally becomes your playground.
Here are some examples:
- You interact in a sensitive discussion without fear of criticism.
- You make decisions or take chances even when you know you may fail.
- You apply for a new job that you are not completely qualified for but you are willing to learn new skills to further your career.
- Participate in activities that ignite your passion and expose you to new ideas.
- Give compliments. It’s a great conversation starter.
- Surround yourself with confident people. It’s the best way to learn the skill itself.
